Packaging solutions that work for their business and also in line with the trend of sustainable development are now being sought by many catering brands. From conventional plastic boxes to biodegradable packaging, from disposable plastic tableware to eco friendly plant tableware.

Sugarcane Packaging is one of the fastest growing eco-friendly packaging material in the world for food packaging products. They have begun to include sugarcane pulp lunch boxes, sugarcane pulp plates and compostable disposable tableware in procurement plans for chain fast-food brands, food delivery platforms, coffee shops or hotel catering and food delivery companies.

What are the benefits of packing in sugarcane? What is the difference between plastic packaging, paper packaging and PLA packaging ? Will it be worth the adoption for foodservice brands in the long run? I will expand on this in this article.

What is Sugarcane Packaging?

Sugarcane Packaging is alternatively known as Bagasse Packaging. It is a packaging that is made from the fibrous residue that is left after extracting juice from sugarcane. It is made by using this material as raw material and high temperature pressing process. It is used to make various food packaging products.

Most of these sugarcane fibres were previously wasted or burned. Now with the development of environmental protection technologies, these agricultural by-products have been reused and transformed to high-value environmental protection packaging products and achieved resource recycling.

In the market, you can buy a variety of sugarcane packaging products like Sugarcane Food Containers, Bagasse Clamshell Containers, Sugarcane Plates, Compostable Bowls, Disposable Tableware and Takeaway Food Packaging.
They are made from natural plant fibres and are currently a promising sustainable option for food packaging.

Why is the sugarcane packaging gaining more and more popularity?

On the one hand, the packaging of sugarcane meets the trend of environmental protection. The main material for sugarcane residue packaging is natural plant fibre. Secondly, consumers are increasingly accepting environmentally friendly packaging. In the age of social media, one aspect of eco-friendly packaging can often improve the brand image, increase customer loyalty and even add further brand value to the enterprise.

Advantages of Sugarcane Packaging in Comparison to Plastic Packaging:

Plastic food containers are mostly made of materials that are petroleum-based, and are difficult to decompose, waste resources and are not biodegradable. On the other hand, sugarcane packaging has great advantages. In addition, sugarcane packing has excellent heat resistance.

Many sugarcane food containers can resist high temperature food and are ideal for packaging hamburgers, fried chicken, hot meals and takeout foods, without releasing harmful substances. It is evident that sugarcane packaging provides catering brands a competitive advantage over traditional plastic packaging in enhancing the environmental image.

What is the Difference Between Sugarcane Packaging and Paper Packaging?

A lot of buyers may think that paper packaging is green enough already. So why choose sugarcane packaging at all? In fact, there are some big differences between the two, even though they’re both eco-friendly packaging materials.

Paper packaging is mostly produced from wood pulp, hence forest resources have to be consumed. Most paper products are recyclable, but the process of making them still requires a lot of water and energy. But the sugarcane packaging is using the byproducts of the sugar industry, which belongs to the resource-reutilization product essentially. “Environmentally, the packaging for sugar cane is more sustainable. In addition, the oil and water resistance of sugarcane packaging is usually better than ordinary paper packaging. For example, when used to hold oil-rich foods such as fried chicken, fried rice and french fries, sugarcane lunch boxes can maintain better structural stability and are less likely to soften or deform.

Sugarcane packaging vs PLA packaging, Which is better?

PLA is a bioplastic made from plant raw materials such as cornstarch and is widely used in the manufacture of transparent beverage cups and cold drink packaging. However, PLA products are more suitable for cold drink and salad packaging due to their tendency to deform in high temperature environments. Sugarcane packaging has better heat resistance and is more suitable for hot meals, soups and foods that require microwave heating. Besides, the natural plant fibre texture of sugarcane packaging is easy to convey the environmental protection concept. PLA packaging however, looks similar to traditional plastic and is difficult for consumers to tell apart. Therefore, many catering brands now use both PLA and Sugarcane Packaging according to different product requirements for the best packaging effect.

Where Can Sugarcane Packaging Be Used?

Brands of fast-food chains can use hamburger boxes and plates in the shape of sugarcane;

Food boxes can be made from sugarcane packaging by delivery platforms.

Coffee shops can pair sugarcane trays with compostable cutlery to create a fully sustainable takeaway experience.

Hotels and caterers can go the whole way and use compostable disposable tablewear.

With excellent heat resistance, oil resistance and leak-proof properties, sugarcane packaging is capable of covering almost all food service scenarios.

How to Choose a Reliable Sugarcane Packaging Supplier？

When you select a supplier, you should consider not only the price of the product, but also its quality and the supplier's ability to deliver.

In general, good-quality suppliers are characterized by:

1.With its own manufacturing facility;

2.Meets international certifications such as FDA, BPI and LFGB;

3.Supporting OEM and ODM customization services;

4.Have the capacity to provide consistent, long-term supply and reliable lead times.

5.A lot of international export experience.

These factors are directly related to the stability of product quality and the subsequent procurement risks.
